First Edition
First edition, first impression, of Milne's first collection of stories featuring the famous bear. Christopher Robin's stuffed bear, bought at Harrods for his first birthday, was known initially as Edward or Edward Bear. It was renamed Winnie-the-Pooh after two real animals: a favourite bear cub at London Zoo, "Winnie", and a friend's swan, which Robin christened "Pooh". The toy inspired the "Teddy Bear" poem in When We Were Very Young (1924) and a story Milne contributed to the London Evening News, "The Wrong Sort of Bees", which later provided the basis of the first chapter in Milne's follow-up book, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). This story collection was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its poetic predecessor. One critic wrote, "when the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite, p. 317). Payne IIA. Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover with vignette of Pooh and Robin enclosed with gilt rule, yellow map endpapers, top edge gilt. Line drawings throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine a touch darkened, else bright, minor edge rubbing, usual tanning of endpapers, contents clean. A near-fine copy.

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Shepard, Ernest H. (illustrator). First Edition. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark green cloth, decorated in gilt to front board with an illustration of Christopher Robin and Pooh, lettered in gilt to spine, top edge gilt, and illustrated map endpapers; lacking dust jacket. Near fine, with very bright gilt, a faint mark to front board, light rubbing to spine ends, lightly bumped corners, former owner's name to front free endpaper, some illustrations partially colored in, some squiggly lines in pencil to pp. 64 - 65, occasional light soiling to pages, and a small nick to right edge of rear pastedown. Overall, a lovely and very sturdy copy of this children's classic. Winnie-the-Pooh is the second in Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Each telling an individual and complete story, the chapters of Winnie-the-Pooh can be read independently of one another. Milne created the story of Winnie the Pooh for his son Christopher Robin, who had a teddy bear named Edward Bear. In his introduction, Milne explains how Edward Bear became Winnie the Pooh, although he notes that "we can't remember whether Winnie is called after Pooh, or Pooh after Winnie." The name "Winnie" comes from a bear that the Milnes saw at the London Zoo, while the name "Pooh" is from a swan whom the fictional Christopher Robin encountered in When We Were Very Young (1924).

Fine Binding. Condition: Very Good. Ernest H Shepard (illustrator). A beautifully bound set of A A Milne's classic children's works featuring his anthropomorphic bear Winnie the Pooh. From the library of Julian's Park, which was once home to the Socialite Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Comprising early editions of these works. 'Winnie The Pooh' is a second edition of 1926; 'House at Pooh Corner' is a third edition of 1929; 'When We Were Very Young' is a Nineteenth Edition of 1929, 'Now We Are Six' is a fifth edition of 1929.Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. This set of best selling works comprises of the first volume of stories solely regarding Pooh, 'Winnie-The-Pooh', and two poetry collections, 'Now We Are Six' and 'When We Were Very Young'. 'Now We are Six' contains thirty-five verses, eleven of which are accompanied by illustrations featuring Winnie-The-Pooh. 'When We Were Very Young' contains forty-four poems, including 'Teddy Bear' which, upon its initial publication in 'Punch' magazine, was the first literary appearance of Winnie-The-Pooh. The introduction to 'When We Were Very Young' implies that the narrator may be Christopher Robin. These works are illustrated by E H Shepard, a popular twentieth century illustrator whose pen and ink drawings were featured in all of Milne's works.Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with their binder's stamp to the front pastedown. All volumes are in a half calf binding, with gilt tooled silhouettes of the characters Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit and Piglet to the spines. The boards are covered in charming paper which has a repeated animal motif. This same paper is used for the endpapers. Pleydell-Bouverie was a close friend of Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He often bound books for her as gifts. From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the spines and extremities. Fading to the spine of 'When We Were Very Young'. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, 'Sangorski and Sutcliffe'. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Very Good. book.

In Milne's first book of children's verse, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG (1924), the silly old bear appears in only a couple poems and does not yet have a name. Here we get many of the best loved stories from the Hundred Acre Wood: Piglet meets a Heffalump, Eeyore has a birthday, and Pooh runs out of honey. [Haring-Smith C79; Cutler-Stiles p. 116; Grolier, no. 71]. The second in the classic quartet of Milne's cycle based on the teddy bear which belonged to his son, Christopher Robin Milne. Pooh first appeared in a poem, published in Punch in February 1924, and reprinted in When We Were Very Young, but the character was only fully developed in Winnie-the-Pooh, which documents the adventures of the "bear of little brain." Accompanied by the magical drawings of Ernest H. Shepard, whom Milne had met as they both were contributors to Punch. Their collaboration spanned many projects and "Milne was so aware of the extent to which Shepard's drawings contributed to the success of Winnie-the-Pooh that he arranged for him to share in the royalties." [Grolier: One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature, p. 232] To own a copy of this first trade edition, signed by both contributors is exceptional.
