With his disorderly band of accomplices - including a demonic, gun-toting tomcat - he immediately begins to create havoc.Disappearances, destruction and death spread through the city like wildfire and Margarita discovers that her lover has vanished in the chaos. Making a bargain with the devil, she decides to try a little black magic of her own to save the man she loves . In Soviet Moscow, God is dead, but the devil - to say nothing of his retinue of demons, from a loudmouthed, gun-toting tomcat, to the fanged fallen angel Koroviev - is very much alive. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Translated by Diana Burgin,Katherine O'Conner (illustrator). 1st Edition. Soft cover, as new, without writing or any marks, 422 pps. The novel's vision of Soviet life in the 1930s is so ferociously accurate that it could not be published during its author's lifetime and appeared only in a censored edition in the 1960s. Its truths are so enduring that its language has become part of the common Russian speech. One of the essential classics of modern Russian literature.

Fine Binding. Condition: New. Suart, Peter (illustrator). First Edition, Third Impression. A new copy in Folio Society wrapping, as received directly from the publisher. Typeset in Joanna with Tooting Sans display. Printed on Abbey Wove paper at Gomer Press Ltd, Llandysul, Wales, and bound by them in cloth blocked with a design by the artist. 'The Devil has arrived in Moscow and, along with his demons and a large black cat, he carves a trail of chaos and destruction through Soviet society. Smuggled past the censors in 1967, and published more than 25 years after Mikhail Bulgakov's death, The Master and Margarita was an instant success. Its subversive message, dark humour and lyrical force combined to make it a beacon of optimism and freedom throughout Russia and the world. One of Folio's most requested titles, the novel has also been a source of inspiration for writers and musicians, featuring in David Bowie's Top 100 Books and inspiring Mick Jagger's lyrics for 'Sympathy for the Devil'. This sumptuous edition showcases Peter Suart's specially commissioned illustrations, which explore the philosophical and fantasy themes of the narrative, while his stunning binding design features Azazello, Koroviev and Behemoth in antagonistic poses. Historian and Russian history expert Orlando Figes delves deep into the historical context of the novel and its barely concealed attacks on the Soviet Union in an introduction written for the edition.' - Folio Society. First printing. First US edition of Michael Glenny's superior translation, published the same year as the Grove Press first that lacked over 20,000 words. Written in the time of Stalin, this satirical black fantasy was not published until after the author's death - and then in censored form. Clearly influenced by Goethe and Dostoevsky, it's a daring philosophical novel of chaos and comedy, striking a tone that would feel cutting-edge and contemporary decades later, during its discovery in the 1960s. First translated into English by Mirra Ginsburg for Grove Press the same year, that version used the censored MOSKVA text, lacking approximately 23,000 words of the novel; this is the first translation into English that didn't use the abbreviated text. A great copy. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red and gilt. In original unclipped ($5.95) color pictorial dust jacket designed by Mercer Mayer. Gold endpapers, yellow topstain, fore-edge machine deckle. vi, 394 pages. Small penned price to front flap. Some minor soil, toning overall. Else sharp and sound. Near fine in a near fine jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First American edition. The first appearance of The Master & Margarita in the United States, preceding the Harper and Row edition. A near fine copy, just with some foxing to the fore-edge of the outer text block. The faintest foxing to the pastedowns and endpapers but the contents otherwise flawless. In a near fine, unclipped dust jacket, with a tiny nick on the spine and the slightest bit of rubbing at the extremities. An uncommonly beautiful example still. The story of the Devil's visit to Moscow, in an atheistic Soviet Union. It is Bulgakov's masterpiece, and arguably the greatest work of 20th Century Russian literature.

Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First American edition. The first appearance of the Master and Margarita in the US. Translated by Mirra Ginsburg. Preceding the other American edition of 1967 put out by Harper and Row, translated by Michael Glenny. A Fine copy in very nearly Fine dust jacket with just a bit of wear at the spine ends. This book is the author's masterpiece and considered by many the finest novel to come out of Russia in the twentieth century. Started in 1928, Bulgakov burned the manuscript in 1930, only to re-write and revise it for the next ten years until his death. A socio-political satire oscillating between two realities, one where the Devil and his entourage take a flat in 1930s Russia and wreak havoc on society in a series of amusing escapades, the second in Pontius Pilot's Jerusalem, where he condemns Jesus, despite grave misgivings. A work of unique humor and profound insight, it builds upon the great 19th century Russian predecessors and is now a foundation of the modern Russian literary canon. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
