Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.' " This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just maybe, his or her toys have feelings--has been charming children since its first publication in 1922. E-376; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 33 pages.

First Edition
First edition, English issue (published simultaneously with the American issue) of this beloved childrenâs classic, âone of the first modern picture books, a perfect combination of story and picturesâ (Mahony, 234), with seven beautiful color illustrations by William Nicholson. Quarto, original paper-covered pictorial boards and cloth spine, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with seven color illustrations (three double-page) by William Nicholson. In very good condition. Uncommon. âMargery Biancoâs first childrenâs book, The Velveteen Rabbit, was written while she was living in England⦠Her own two children were young and at an age when toys meant much to them. She had vivid memories of the toys she had loved as a child, and this thinking about toys and remembering toys suddenly brought them to life. The Velveteen Rabbit introduced English artist, William Nicholson, to the field of childrenâs booksâ (Meigs et al., 473). Nicholsonâs work has been placed âin the front rank among picture-books of this centuryâ (Marcus Crouch).

First edition. Paper covered boards with Nicholson's illustrations to the covers, in the original publisher's pictorial dustwrapper with same design as the covers. A near fine copy, with a short split to foot of the upper joint, light spotting to early pages, in a very good dustwrapper with a small chip to foot of spine, a little fraying to the head and a couple of short closed tears to edges. Overall, a very well preserved example of a rare and fragile book. Endpapers illustrated in colour with lots of drawings of little rabbits. Seven wonderful colour illustrations, some double page, all in lovely bold colours and each with a caption printed at the bottom. This book is a classic children's tale and one which has been loved by generations of children. The book tells of the Velveteen Rabbit's longing to become "real". His friend the skin horse tells him he can only achieve this once a child loves him. The lovely story is accompanied by illustrations which are completely in harmony with the text. This is a delicate book which is now highly sought after, very elusive, and difficult to find in such nice condition as this.
