Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake, Sue Gent (illustrator). First Edition/First Printing. One of the most beloved children's stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination. Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life! First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl's story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence. Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other's trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story. Roald Dahl's classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. ARTIST EDITION 7" x 10" trim size. 220 Pages. Limited to 1250 copies. Full cloth, smyth-sewn binding with embossed cover. Dust jacket resembling Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar wrapper (the only edition featuring the dust jacket). Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Blake, Quentin (illustrator). First Edition. Stated First Published 1980; fourth printing, 1985. Beautifully signed and inscribed by Roald Dahl at front endpaper: "Olwen, Love Roald Dahl." Bold large inscription and signature fills the page. According to prior collector, Olwen in this case refers to Olwen Barnard (born Hill-Duffy), a relation to Sir Joseph Brian Barnard of North Yorkshire. Olwen, pronounced O-loon, is of Welsh origin and a name for girls translating as "white footprint" or "white track." According to legend, the goddess Olwen was so gentle and fragile that white trefoils or clovers grew in her footprints. Olwen is a Welsh favorite, and was also the name of a legendary princess in what is believed to be the earliest Arthurian romance. Other sources cite Olwen as a Welsh sun goddess whose name means golden wheel. According to this tale, she overcame thirteen obstacles to obtain her true love; and thus teaches tenacity in obtaining goals. Red textured boards, gilt spine titles, light shelf wear, bump. Pages near fine; no writing. Dynamic illustration by Quentin Blake profusely throughout. Pictorial bookmark set in stating: "Signed." Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Original dust wrapper, light shelf wear; clipped, protected in new clear sleeve. Bookstore label remains above price clipping at lower front flap with price marked out and appearing to say: "KG, Price in [GBP symbol]." Rather humorous and apropos dust wrapper features bold red and black titles with color illustration of the Twits at front panel; back panel features the monkeys standing on their heads with the repeated titles placed upside down. Scarce near fine signed early printing in same wrapper. Bored with playing minor juvenile tricks on each nother, the sick and satisfyingly revolting Twits turn attention to capturing a family of monkeys for a circus act. The monkey's cruel incarceration in a cage is avenged when the birds trick the Twits into believing the world has turned upside-down. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, nastiest, most abhorrent people in the world. They hate everything, except playing fiendish pranks on each other, catching unsuspecting birds to put in their bird pies, and making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough! With the help of Roly-Poly Bird, they prepare for some well-deserved revenge served cold. And. Roald Dahl's thrillingly grotesque tale features the deliciously wicked, and deftly appropos, artwork of Quentin Blake. They're disgusting and despicable--they're the Twits! "It's nothing but delicious riddance to rotten rubbish! Parents may turn chartreuse or puce at the descriptions of the Twits, but little ones will squeal in delighted disgust." - School Library Journal. Printed in Great Britain by Mackay's of Chatham. First edition, early printing of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Love Doug Roald Dahl 1984." Additionally signed by Quentin Blake below. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of the twentieth century. Dahl's ability to twist words into a clever and creative new language is fascinating to children, and is evident in BFG. The gruesome descriptions of the horrid giants and the subtle allusions to other stories will entertain children young and old. An animated adaptation was released in theatres in 1987 with David Jason providing the voice of the BFG and Amanda Root as the voice of Sophie. It was also the basis for the 2016 film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader.

Dahl and Blake achieved considerable success with The Enormous Crocodile in 1978 and this, another picture book for young children, was a worthy successor. Dahl dedicated the work to his three stepdaughters. When Dahl delivered the typescript to his English publisher, Tom Maschler responded with a note stating "Vintage Dahl. And with new aspects as well. What more could one ask?" A review in the Times Literary Supplement noted "there are better things than this in children's literature but this will fill that space where the ego and the libido run riot, where the only relationship is the camaraderie between fellow gluttons". Quarto. Original illustrated boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, dark blue endpapers. No dust jacket issued. Illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake. Spine and extremities a little faded, sides bright, short split at head of rear joint, foot of spine and corners worn, short closed tear to lower margin of last leaf, otherwise internally clean. The Twits is a darkly humorous children's story that centers around a horrid married couple. The two, Mr. and Mrs. Twit, despise each other and engage in a series of abusive pranks against one another involving a glass eye, worms, and balloons. The two get their comeuppance when a group of monkeys called Muggle-Wumps glue the Twits' furniture to the ceiling, making them think that they are upside down. The Twits is a Roald Dahl classic, featuring two of his nastiest villains. The book was listed as number 81 in the BBC's The Big Read, a United Kingdom-wide survey to determine the 200 best-loved books. Amazingly, nine of Dahl's books made the list. Signed by Author.

First edition, first impression, signed and dated "Roald Dahl 6 March, 1982" on the front free endpaper in purple. Jeremy Treglown found that the book "owes something to a circus act or a Punch and Judy show", and notes that Quentin Blake "lightens things by visually reminding the reader both how small George is, and. how lonely and innocent". A contemporary review noted that, "For some time now Roald Dahl has been the most popular living novelist that we have for children, despite, or sometimes possibly because of, lapses in taste. George's Marvellous Medicine is a good example of this ability he has to entertain the young often at the cost of offending many of the other sort". First edition, early printing of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Boldly signed by the author on the half-title page, "with love Roald Dahl April, 1989." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, bookplate.
