In typical fashion, she describes a French man who has captured and is cleaning his own snails, leaving them to starve in an aquarium until they are ready to eat: "For a day or two more they stayed, bottoms up, on the glass. Then they began to drop off. Nights were punctuated by the thumps of snails fainting in their little Black Hole. We lost sleep, feeling very sick for them. The last scene I caught through the dining room door: Plume and Doudouce bent gravely over a lighted table, pouring the hot sauce into each up-ended snail shell. Their hands trembled very slightly and Plume's tongue stuck out." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 253 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Not A Cookery Book, But A Book For Everyone Who Enjoys Eating FISHER, M.F.K. [253] pp. Hamish Hamilton, Publisher 8 1/4" x 5 7/8" 1937 In Serve It Forth, her first book, M. F. K. Fisher takes readers on an animated journey through culinary history, beginning with the honey-loving Greeks and the immoderate Romans. Fisher recalls a hunt for snails and truffles with one of the last adepts in that art and recounts how Catherine de Medici, lonely for home cooking, touched off a culinary revolution by bringing Italian chefs to France. Each essay makes clear the absolute firmness of Fisher's taste--contrarian and unique--and her skill at stirring memory and imagination into a potent brew.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near fine. First edition. The publication of Serve It Forth announced the delightful debut of M.F.K. Fisher, "one of the finest of all food writers" (Barile, 127). Serve It Forth earned immediate high praise as "a delightful book erudite and witty and experienced and young. The truth is that it is stamped on every page with a highly individualized personality And it really is a book about food The young author goes back to the simple and democratic food of the Egyptians and their simple lives; she dwells a bit on the Greeks She explains how good cooking, like learning, was kept alive in the monasteries in the Dark Ages. She has surprising notes from Elizabethan England and Catherine de' Medici's France The first adjective for Serve It Forth must certainly be "different" (New York Times). "In a properly run culture, M.F.K. Fisher would be recognized as one of the great writers this country has produced in this century" (Raymond Sokolov). With eight full-page illustrations. Octavo, original pale orange cloth, original dust jacket, unclipped (priced $2.50). Book with only minor toning to spine; rare dust jacket with a bit of wear to spine ends. First printing. book.
