Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Hardback. Dust Jacket. Fat 8vo. The Alexandria Quartet in one vol., translated into Swedish as Alexandria Kvartetten (presentation and association copy signed by Durrell). pp 191 + 183 + 254 + 221 for the 4 books. Top edge gilt, VG + in VG d.j. (wear and tiny chips to extremities in places, two short tears and minor creases near extremities). Presentation copy signed by Durrell to front blank, 'Peter and Joan Bird from Larry Durrell, Sommires 1984'. Sommires, in the Languedoc in the south of France, was Durrell's home from 1966 to 1990. He is buried there. An important association copy: Group Captain Peter and Joan Bird were friends of Durrell's for over twenty years. Peter Drury Bird (1920-2014), an affable David Niven look-alike, was one of the last surviving Lancaster pilots who bombed Nazi-occupied Europe. After the war he took part in the Berlin airlift, and in 1961 became Britain's defence attach in Scandinavia, which no doubt explains why Durrell presented this Swedish edition to him. In 1966, two years after first meeting him, the Birds visited Lawrence Durrell at Corfu. Here Durrell became seriously attracted to Joan Bird (ne Coury, 1918-2011), who was described as 'a tall, striking woman with all the graces of a diplomatic wife coupled with a dramatic intensity of manner' (Ian S. MacNiven, 'Lawrence Durrell: A Biography'.) Durrell met the Birds again in Paris a year later. Joan's refusal to have a child with him resulted in a break to their friendship for many years. They were finally reconciled in 1975. Signedes.
